Road trip to Martha's Vineyard

Chuck Close
" In Art and Life and in Society problem solving is way to over rated,
Problem creation is much more interesting"

I looked straight ahead and saw a
place that spoke to me.
The trees were in the distance
the land was clean.
A stream cut
diagonally through it all.
Round rocks dotted the banks of the
stream and a boulder sat in the middle.
The sky was gray from here to there
so we stopped and made it home.

Industrial Devolution,
My Buddy
Chris Ramirez sent me this piece
(Below).
I think anything like this needs to be passed on.
If there's anything at all truly important about
the internet it's the ability to raise awareness
on a massive scale. The environment should
be our #1 concern, a healthy planet
for our survival. We need it, It doesn't need us.
It will survive with or with out us.
If we want to lengthen our stay here
and help to Nurture life in general,
it would be good to remember that money is power.
If you don't have the time to get out and protest
you can be just as effective and make just as
huge a difference (if not more) simply by spending your money
consciously. Every day you spend money on
something, if you put that cash into environmentally
conscious and responsible company's big and small
you'll create positive change.

THE ARROW OF TIME
Portraits of his family shot same time every year.
Since 1976
By Photographer Diego Goldberg.
He adds one every year.
For me It brings to mind how quickly life moves
and reminds me that if I want to accomplish
something substantial I better get a move on.

Andy Goldsworthy
(From the Documentary , Rivers and Tides)
Andy Goldsworthy in his own words,
"I enjoy the freedom of just using my hands and "found" tools--a sharp stone, the quill of a feather, thorns. I take the opportunities each day offers: if it is snowing, I work with snow, at leaf-fall it will be with leaves; a blown-over tree becomes a source of twigs and branches. I stop at a place or pick up a material because I feel that there is something to be discovered. Here is where I can learn. "

"Looking, touching, material, place and form are all inseparable from the resulting work. It is difficult to say where one stops and another begins. The energy and space around a material are as important as the energy and space within. The weather--rain, sun, snow, hail, mist, calm--is that external space made visible. When I touch a rock, I am touching and working the space around it. It is not independent of its surroundings, and the way it sits tells how it came to be there."

"I want to get under the surface. When I work with a leaf, rock, stick, it is not just that material in itself, it is an opening into the processes of life within and around it. When I leave it, these processes continue."

"Movement, change, light, growth and decay are the lifeblood of nature, the energies that I try to tap through my work. I need the shock of touch, the resistance of place, materials and weather, the earth as my source. Nature is in a state of change and that change is the key to understanding. I want my art to be sensitive and alert to changes in material, season and weather. Each work grows, stays, decays. Process and decay are implicit. Transience in my work reflects what I find in nature."

"The underlying tension of a lot of my art is to try and look through the surface appearance of things. Inevitably, one way of getting beneath the surface is to introduce a hole, a window into what lies below."

Part Four

After Diane Arbus Died Her daughter Doon
and close friend Marvin Isreal started to compile
Imagery and every thing else they could get their
hands on relating to Diane Arbus.
They found a student that had taken
a class of Diane's in 1970 that had brought
a tape recorder along. The quality of the
recordings wasn't that good so they asked another
close friend of Dianes to read her words.
They put her words over her imagry
to make this intimate look into
her approach to making images.

Time of useful consciousness
(TUC) is defined as the amount of time an individual is able to perform flying duties efficiently in an environment of inadequate oxygen supply. It is the period of time from the interruption of the oxygen supply or exposure to an oxygen-poor environment to the time when useful function is lost, and the individual is no longer capable of taking proper corrective and protective action.
